We just returned from another awesome trip to Belize. We traveled to the island of Ambergris Caye which is the largest and most popular island of Belize. The main populated area is the southern part of the island and the town is San Pedro. With more and more visitors and expats moving to the island it has seen a lot development heading north.
The island is protected by one of its main attractions, the beautiful reef that runs parallel and is the second largest in the western hemisphere. The reef keeps the beautiful Caribbean waters calm and provides protection from erosion.
We spent a lot of time this trip on the leeward side of the island otherwise known as the lagoon side. The lagoon is dotted with tons of cayes and protected by mangroves which also preserve the island and are protected. The mangroves are a great habitat for a variety of fish and can be the salt water crocodiles cover for ambush. That’s right (crocs) in the caribbean ocean!
Swim at your own risk! (or don’t)
The lagoon provides amazing sunsets and there are many bars that cater to just that! The Truck Stop is a great place to have beers, eat, have more beers, and then catch the sunset. The Truck Stop is made up of fabricated shipping containers and strategically positioned into a bar/food court setting. Awesome bartenders and food, a must stop while in San Pedro.
Below are a few of the sunsets that we captured from the Truck Stop!
Okay, moving on to the North. The ” thing to do ” in San Pedro is visit the SECRET BEACH. The secret beach used to be a place for locals and was a hidden spot on the lagoon side where families would take their kids to swim and just to get away from the rat race and tourists.
Eventually word got out and now it is basically overrun with tourists. The Secret Beach is approximately 40 minutes drive by golf cart from town down rough and unmarked roads. The area has really started to develop over the last two years with bars being built and food trucks popping up.
The Secret Beach is a great place to spend an afternoon and swim and or people watch. Just a beautiful spot with calm and crystal clear water. You can even see Blackadore Caye ( Leonardo DiCaprio’s ) private island from here. The Secret Beach has become the not so Secret Beach!

While most visitors spend the majority of their time on the reef side, we suggest you spend an afternoon or two exploring the leeward side. There is so much to see and the northern leeward side provides an old school rustic feel away from the hustle and bustle of town.
This side of the island is awesome for fishing the flats and fly fishing too! There are tons of experienced and knowledgeable guides that are sure to put you on the fish.
Thanks for reading!
CHEERS!
Great sunset pics. I sometimes miss the old days before secret beach was even named and you could only get there by boat.
Thank you! I like the old days as well!
