Caye Chapel is a privately owned Belizean island that is now uninhabited and was recently purchased by a Mexican Investment group. The island was previously owned by an American billionaire that ultimately filed for bankruptcy. Before the recent purchase the island was semi deserted and had one of Belize’s only golf courses. The island is an amazing place with killer views all around. There is a massive clubhouse that is at least 25,000 sq. feet, a large pool and lounge area, and even a small airstrip.
I had the pleasure and privilege to play the course on two different occasions before it was closed by the recent acquisition. We were invited to play with some locals and expats from San Pedro that we have become friends with during our trips to Ambergris Caye. Getting over to the island of Caye Chapel has been an adventure in itself. We take the water taxi and the first stop is at Caye Caulker for drop offs and pick-ups. Then the taxi heads approximately 3 miles south to Caye Chapel. The first time I made the trip the water taxi broke down and we had to do a mid ocean transfer. This was a little hairy due to the waves and the fact that I was out late the night before consuming massive amounts of local beverages. Every time I have been invited to play there have been torrential downpours and the group blamed it all on me, apparently it doesn’t rain on golf day unless I am there.
The course is great and has amazing views on every hole. The course was maintained by the bank and had a skeleton crew of grounds keepers that kept things manicured and playable. There are a few houses/casitas on the beach that were vacant, fully furnished, and had to be over 3,000 sq. feet. We had the entire island to ourselves and had some amazing memorable times that will not be forgotten.
According to articles and rumors the investors have plans to rehab the island and put in luxury accommodations and open it back up for tourism. Until that happens I will just have to reflect on many good memories.
