San Pedro, BELIZE – Travel Hack # 1

San Pedro, BELIZE – Travel Hack # 1

PACK LIGHT! When traveling to San Pedro on the beautiful island of Ambergris Caye make sure you do not over pack. It took us a few trips to figure this out and now we have it down to a science. The first several trips we would lug around giant suitcases stuffed with clothing and items that we would never use. Seriously, San Pedro is so laid back that shorts, flip flops, and tees are the norm.

There is probably never going to be a time that you need to pack dress clothes. Dressing up in San Pedro is considered wearing khaki shorts and a long sleeve linen shirt. We made the mistake of packing like we were moving to the island the first few trips. Now we each carry only a backpack and a carry on duffle bag.

Things to pack: Shorts, extra flip flops, tee shirts, tank tops, under garments, swimwear, and ball caps. Of course you will need toiletries; bug spray is also a good idea, and any necessary or preventive medications. We always wear a hoodie or long sleeve top to the airport when departing to save space in the bags and for the chilly airplane ride. The long sleeve can also come in handy during the occasional cool breezy night. Sneakers are unnecessary unless you plan on taking trips to the mainland for hiking or tours or want to exercise as they also take up a lot of space.

Our duffels carry our clothes and the back packs have our liquids and electronic devices such as iPads, laptops, and camera gear. Make sure you follow TSA guidelines when carrying on liquids and have them readily accessible for screening. Remember your duffle will also have to fall within the guidelines for carry on. (More on this on tip #2)

When booking a condo or room make sure to inquire if laundry services are available. We always reserve a condo with a washer and dryer and wash our clothes at our own convenience. There are laundry services on the island as well if your lodging does not offer it. By having a washer and dryer we can launder our swimwear, t shirts, etc.. which means less we have to travel with and we always have clean clothes. The Caribbean sun is intense so make sure to pack lightweight clothing that breathes easily.

Anything you may need or forget is also readily available around the island. Some things such as bug spray, sun tan lotion, and name brand items can be pricey.

Make sure to go and visit Belize and if you are staying in San Pedro- PACK LIGHT!
