The Great Blue Heron ( aka BOB to us ) is a very large wading bird and common near the shores of open waters and in wetlands over most of North America. The Great Blue Heron can adapt to almost any wetland habitat in its range. It can be found in numbers in fresh and saltwater mangroves and marshes, swamps, flooded meadows, lake edges, or shorelines. It is very adaptable and may be seen in heavily developed areas as long as they hold bodies of fish-bearing water.
This guy can always be found near fisherman in our neighborhood looking for a free handout. He is kind of lazy and has definitely mastered the concept of work smarter not harder.
The primary food for great blue heron is small fish. It is also known to feed on a wide range of crabs, shrimp, aquatic insects, rodents, and other small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds, especially baby ducks.
They usually nest in trees or bushes near the water, often on islands.
We really enjoy having these birds in our backyard and being able to coexist with them. They can be a pain in the ass at times but we do enjoy their company.
